Mami Wata: An Evening of Transformation

Do you recall the Day of Transformation during May 2018? Transformative performance, dialogue, amazing food, dancing, and more?! We are eager to invite you to join us for this year's, "Evening of Transformation" featuring a Keynote Performance from Natalie Daise! Our theme is "Mami Wata", reflecting on Araminta Ross (Harriet Tubman), James Baldwin, and the flow of our own lives during a critical point in our nation's history. Other featured guests include Miya Fowler & DJ SCrib. More information on the gathering & each of our performers is below.

Mami Wata, or Mother Water, is a mythological mermaid creature or water spirit celebrated and honored by many peoples in a variety of ways. We are eager to explore the rivers that Harriet Tubman and James Baldwin came to know intimately: From the Combahee River (South Carolina) to the Seine River (Paris). How does the water guide us?

Our Keynote Performance will be from the creative catalyst, Ms. Natalie Daise, known widely for Nick Jr's, "Gullah Gullah Island", her beautiful visual art, master storytelling, and for being a caring, amazing human based right here in South Carolina! She will offer "Becoming Harriet Tubman", a one-woman experience based in accurate information from Mama Tubman's life. She will join our host for the evening, Poet & Founder of Speaking Down Barriers, Marlanda Dekine-Sapient Soul, in dialogue following her performance. How do stories heal us & lead us to justice?

We are also excited to welcome Miya Fowler & DJ SCrib! Miya was first trained in African dance and is well versed in various forms of dance. Currently, she is pursuing her Masters, studying the positive somatic effects of dance on the body. DJ SCrib is a true Geechie boy from Charleston, SC. SCrib has been known as a story-teller through his musical DJ sets by creating nostalgic moments of rap and R&B sing along sessions to crazy mosh pits! With 8 years of experience as a DJ, his signature style of comedy on the mic, smooth transitions, and a little show of turntablism is what the crowd craves whenever his hands touch a pair of turntables. How does dance & music heal us?

People are still salivating for the food prepared last May, and guess what?! Chef Traci is back, and we will enjoy an amazing menu together!

Children are welcome all night long! Important note: Be mindful that unedited music will be played after 9 PM. Non-alcoholic drinks & food are included in the price of your ticket. Alcoholic drinks will be available in exchange for a donation. Our bodies require sustenance & we require fellowship.

We Are Ready For The Wata! Are you?!
