      Forging a Life: The Journey from Slavery to Freedom

      Explore the African-American historical experience at Rose Hill Plantation through powerful storytelling, interactive activities and demonstrations by living historians.

      Cost is $5 for adults, $2 for children ages 6-15.

      Interactive activities include:
      - Blacksmith demonstrations by Jamal Hall
      - Brickmaking activity by Tyrie Rowell
      - 1800s cooking demonstrations by Dontavius Williams in Rose Hill's original kitchen
      - Open house and "Black Citizenship in the Age of Jim Crow" exhibit in historic caretaker's cottage
      - Self-guided tour of Gist Mansion's first floor
      - Ranger-led walk to remains of 19th-century sharecropper's cabin
      - Hands-on crafts

      Experience "The Chronicles of Adam" at 2:00 pm on the back lawn. Dontavius Williams gives a gripping first-person historical interpretation of the life, trials, tribulations and triumphs of a slave named Adam.

      Food will be available for purchase from Cool Hawgz BBQ & More. Cash only.

      Following emancipation in 1865, some freed people left Rose Hill while others remained and became tenant farmers. In both slavery and freedom, African Americans worked hard to forge a life for themselves and their families at Rose Hill Plantation.
